Here are some steps you can take to help prevent an infant or child from choking;

  • Keep small objects out of reach of small children
  • Ensure that toys comply with British and European standards
  • Have toys in age appropriate rooms at work
  • Never leave an infant or child unattended while they are eating or drinking
  • Avoid children eating in the back of cars 
  • In group settings, mealtimes should be well managed. Infant and young children should always be supervised when eating. Important that staff breaks managed to make sure children have suitable support while eating
  • Babies should be sitting up, ideally in a highchair, with their feet supported when eating, this is to stop them from slipping down.
