Nosebleeds

A nosebleed is when blood flows from the nose. This is usually caused by a rupture of the blood vessels from knocking, picking or blowing it. High blood pressure, a fractured skull or medication can also cause the nose to bleed.
Treatment
- Sit the child down and tilt their head in the forward position. This will allow the blood to drain away
- Ask them to breathe through their mouth and hold a disposable cloth or paper towels below the bleed
- Pinch the soft part of their nose for 10 minutes
- Repeat this process if the bleed continues
- After 30 minutes if the nose is still bleeding the child needs to go to hospital sit them upright
Do not tip the head backwards as this may cause blood to run down the back of their throat and block the airway.
