📘 Lesson Summary

Poisoning occurs when a harmful substance enters the body and causes damage. It can happen quickly and may be life-threatening. In this lesson, you will learn how poisoning can occur, how to recognise it, and what action to take.

⭐ How Poison Can Enter the Body

Poison can enter the body in several ways:

  • Swallowed (ingested)
  • Breathed in (inhaled)
  • Absorbed through the skin
  • Injected (e.g. bites or stings)

⚠️ Recognising Poisoning

Signs and symptoms may vary depending on the substance, but can include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Drowsiness or confusion
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Burns around the mouth
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness

If poisoning is suspected, act immediately.

🚨 Treatment for Poisoning

Poisoning can be life-threatening. Always act quickly and safely.

🩺 Immediate Actions

  • Ensure your own safety first before approaching
  • Remove the casualty from the source of the poison if it is safe to do so (e.g. move to fresh air)
  • Check Airway and Breathing

📞 Get Help

  • Call 999 / 112 immediately if the casualty is seriously unwell
  • Call NHS 111 for advice if symptoms are mild

🔍 Gather Information

  • Try to identify what has been taken, inhaled or touched
  • Keep any containers, packaging or substances
  • Find out how much was taken and when

This information is important for emergency services.

⚠️ Do NOT

  • Do not make the casualty vomit
  • Do not give anything to eat or drink unless advised by a professional
  • Do not delay seeking medical help

🧴 Specific Situations

If poison is on the skin:

  • Remove contaminated clothing
  • Rinse the affected area with plenty of water

If poison is inhaled:

  • Move the casualty to fresh air immediately

If poison is in the eye:

  • Rinse the eye with clean running water for at least 20 minutes

👀 Ongoing Care

  • Monitor the casualty’s breathing and level of response
  • Place in the recovery position if unconscious but breathing
  • Be prepared to start CPR if breathing stops

💡 Prevention

  • Keep medicines and chemicals out of reach
  • Store substances in original containers
