📘 Lesson Summary
Sepsis and meningitis are serious, life-threatening conditions that require urgent medical attention. They can develop quickly and may initially appear similar to common illnesses such as flu.
🧠 What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is an infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
There are two main types:
- Viral meningitis – more common and usually less severe
- Bacterial meningitis – less common but life-threatening and can lead to sepsis
⚠️ What is Sepsis?
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body overreacts to an infection and begins to damage its own tissues and organs. It can develop from infections in any part of the body, including the lungs, urinary tract, or bloodstream.
🚨 Important
The onset of sepsis or meningitis is often rapid and can be mistaken for flu.
👉 Do not wait for all symptoms to appear
🔍 Recognition – Sepsis / Meningitis
- Fever or very low temperature
- Rapid breathing
- Fast pulse
- Vomiting
- Confusion or agitation
- Unusual drowsiness or difficulty waking
⚠️ Serious Signs
- Cold hands and feet
- Severe muscle or joint pain

👉 On darker skin, check palms, soles, and inside eyelids
🩺 Treatment
- Call 999/112 immediately if sepsis or meningitis is suspected
- Reassure the casualty
- Keep them comfortable and monitor closely
- Treat fever if present (remove excess clothing, keep environment cool)
- Monitor airway and breathing
🚨 Critical Action
👉 Do not delay treatment
👉 Trust your instincts
If you suspect sepsis or meningitis:
Call 999/112 or go to hospital immediately
⚠️ Important
- Symptoms can worsen rapidly
- The casualty may deteriorate quickly
- Early treatment is critical to survival
💡 Key Takeaway
Sepsis and meningitis are medical emergencies
👉 If in doubt, act immediately
