Adult CPR

Watch this video to see how to do CPR on an adult
Check it is safe to approach the casualty. Try to get a response from the casualty, gently shake their shoulders an loudly ask them – hello, are you alright? Quickly check in their mouth and open their airway. Put your hand on the forehead and fingers under the chin gently tilt the head back. Check the casualties breathing for up to 10 seconds. Look, listen and feel. If they are not breathing or breathing is abnormal get someone to call 999/112 and send someone to get a defibrillator.
Now deliver 30 chest compressions. Your body position; shoulders directly over hand; elbow locked. Interlock your fingers with one hand on top of the other and use the heel of your hands, in the centre of their chest. Push down at least 1 third of the casualties chest and the rate of compressions should be 100-120 per minute. Allow chest to return to normal position after each compression. Your hand will always stay in contact with their chest.
After 30 compressions open the casualties airway, pinch their nose, seal your mouth over theirs and give them 2 rescue breaths. Let the chest rise and fall in between breaths.
Lone Rescuer
If you are alone with an adult who is not breathing you must ensure an ambulance has been called before you start CPR.
Chest Compressions Only CPR
If you have not had any training or are unwilling/ unable to perform rescue breaths please give chest compression only CPR. The operator when you call emergency services will be able to give you instructions.
