📘 Lesson Summary

A collapsed lung is a life-threatening condition where air enters the space between the lung and chest wall.

This prevents the lung from expanding properly.

⭐ What is a Collapsed Lung?

Occurs when air enters the pleural space.

This may happen due to:

  • A penetrating chest injury (sucking chest wound)
  • Damage from inside the lung

👉 This can cause the lung to collapse

🔍 Recognition

  • Difficult or painful breathing
  • Uneven chest movement
  • Blue tinge to lips or skin
  • Open chest wound (may make a sucking sound)

🚨 Treatment

  • Call 999 / 112 immediately
  • Help the casualty to sit upright
  • Encourage them to lean towards the injured side
  • Reassure and keep them calm

  • Apply pressure to the chest
  • Attempt to seal or treat the wound

💡 Key Takeaways

  • Collapsed lung is life-threatening
