A collapsed lung is a life-threatening condition where air enters the space between the lung and chest wall.
This prevents the lung from expanding properly.
⭐ What is a Collapsed Lung?
Occurs when air enters the pleural space.
This may happen due to:
- A penetrating chest injury (sucking chest wound)
- Damage from inside the lung
👉 This can cause the lung to collapse
🔍 Recognition
- Difficult or painful breathing
- Uneven chest movement
- Blue tinge to lips or skin
- Open chest wound (may make a sucking sound)
🚨 Treatment
- Call 999 / 112 immediately
- Help the casualty to sit upright
- Encourage them to lean towards the injured side
- Reassure and keep them calm
- Monitor breathing

- Apply pressure to the chest
- Attempt to seal or treat the wound
