The Promise: Supporting Care-Experienced Children and Young People is a 3-hour online CPD course designed for professionals and practitioners who work with, support or make decisions affecting children, young people and families in Scotland.

The course explores Scotland’s commitment to Keeping The Promise and, importantly, what this can look like in everyday practice. Rather than focusing only on policy and theory, learners are encouraged to consider how relationships, language, behaviour, belonging, family connections, professional decisions and opportunities to be heard can shape the experiences of care-experienced children and young people.

Across the course, learners explore what care experience can mean while recognising that care experience is part of someone’s story — it is not their whole story. The course encourages practitioners to move away from labels and assumptions and instead approach children and young people with curiosity, respect and an understanding of their individual strengths, relationships and experiences.

Learning is brought into practice through realistic case studies, interactive scenarios, decision-making activities and reflective exercises. Learners are encouraged to consider situations from the perspective of the child or young person and identify practical changes within their own role, setting or service.

Topics include The Promise and its foundations, understanding care experience, relationships that matter, looking beyond behaviour, creating safety and belonging, working with families and support networks, voice, rights and participation, and Keeping The Promise in everyday practice.

Learners also receive practical downloadable resources to support continued reflection and discussion within their workplace.

The course concludes with a 12-question final assessment, with an 80% pass mark. On successful completion, learners receive a certificate of completion.
