This course provides a practical introduction to Adult Safeguarding and Adult Support & Protection in Scotland, helping learners understand how to recognise concerns, respond appropriately and know what to do next.

Suitable for anyone who requires Adult Support & Protection awareness as part of their role, the course can be used across a wide range of workplaces, services and sectors. No previous safeguarding knowledge is required.

The course explores how harm may present, who may be at greater risk and why concerns are not always immediately obvious. Learners will develop an understanding of the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 and what Adult Support & Protection means in everyday practice.

Through realistic scenarios, videos, case studies and interactive activities, learners explore how to notice signs, changes and patterns; create opportunities for someone to speak; respond appropriately to concerns and disclosures; make clear and factual records; follow reporting and escalation procedures; and continue to support an adult after a concern has been raised.

A key message runs throughout the course:

You don’t need to investigate. You do need to notice, respond and know what to do next.

The course covers:

  • Adult Support & Protection in Scotland and understanding your role
  • Recognising different types and indicators of harm
  • Vulnerability, risk and individual circumstances
  • Creating space for an adult to speak and asking appropriate questions
  • Responding to concerns and disclosures
  • Accurate, timely and factual recording
  • Reporting concerns and knowing when to escalate
  • Supporting an adult after a concern has been raised
  • Dignity, choice and person-centred practice

The course also includes a downloadable Adult Support & Protection toolkit containing practical resources learners can use after completing their training.

The course concludes with a 12-question final assessment, with an 80% pass mark.

Please note: This is an awareness-level course. Learners should always follow their organisation’s own Adult Support & Protection policies, local procedures and the responsibilities of their individual role.
