Amputation

Amputation is the loss of a body part such as a finger, toe, limb or ear. Sometimes the part can be reattached by surgery.
Treatment
- Apply direct pressure over a sterile wound dressing
- Secure the dressing with a bandage to maintain pressure
- Treat for shock if needed
- Call 999/112 for emergency help
- Wrap the severed part in a plastic bag or clingfilm and surround it with gauze before placing it on ice or frozen vegetables such as peas to preserve it
- Mark the package with the time of injury and casualty’s name
Do not
- Let the casualty eat or drink
- Allow the severed part to come into direct contact with ice or anything frozen
- Wash the severed part
