Chain of Survival

This is a series of steps which give the casualty the best chance of survival from a cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating). The steps in each section of the chain of survival are closely linked to the next, if all the steps are followed promptly, the casualty has the best chance of surviving.

Early Help; Recognising the signs of a cardiac arrest it vital. Call for help immediately

Early CPR; CPR before the ambulance arrives can more that double a casualties chance of survival when having a cardiac arrest

Early AED; If an AED is used within the first few minutes of someone having a cardiac arrest, their chances of survival dramatically increase

Early Advanced Life Care; Receiving post-resuscitation care from the ambulance service and hospital will stabilise the casualties condition
