Ear Infections

Ear infections are very common in young children. It can be an inflammation of the outer, middle or inner ear and can be brought on from an infection such as a cold or flu.

Recognition

  • Pulling, tugging or rubbing their ear
  • A high temperature
  • Irritability
  • Lack of appetite
  • Restless sleep
  • Ear pain
  • Hearing loss
  • Discharge from the ear

Treatment

  • If you have written permission from the child’s parent or guardian you can relieve a high temperature and pain with over the counter medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Place a warm compress over the affected ear to help relieve pain

The child should seek further medical attention if-

  • The symptoms do not improve after 2-3 days
  • The child is in pain and the painkillers do not help
  • There is discharge from the ear
