Ear Injury

The most common ear injuries for children are;
  • Inserting something into the ear eg a cotton swab, finger or pencil
  • Object in the ear eg small toy
  • Cuts, scrapes or burns
  • Blow to the ear or head eg falling over or a car accident
  • Loud nose
  • Change of air pressure suddenly

Treatment

If the ear is bleeding from within;

  • Reassure the child
  • Place a sterile gauze over the affected ear, never in it
  • Lie the child on their side with affected ear on the ground to allow blood and fluids to drain away
  • Call 999/112

Object in the ear;

  • Reassure the child
  • Take them to the closest accident and emergency department to have it removed safely
  • Do not try to remove the object yourself as this may cause further damage
