Infant CPR

Watch the video below on how to perform CPR on an infant (under 12 months)
  • Danger; check it is safe to approach the casualty
  • Response; try to get a response from the baby, gently flick the souls of their feet
  • Airway; put the baby on a firm surface and quickly check in their mouth. Open their airway by putting your hand on the forehead and  fingers under the chin gently tilt the head back into a neutral position.
  • Breathing; check their breathing for up to 10 seconds. Look, listen and feel. If they are not breathing or breathing is abnormal get someone to call 999/112 and send someone to get an AED.
  • 5 Rescue breaths; keep the babies airway open, seal your mouth around their mouth and nose and give them 5 initial rescue breaths. Let the chest rise and fall inbetween breaths.
  • Compressions; Deliver 30 chest compressions. Position 2 fingers in the centre of their chest, push down at least 1 third of their chest and the rate of compressions should be 100-120 per minute. Allow the chest to return to normal position after each compression. Your fingers will always stay in contact with their chest. After 30 compressions now give 2 rescue breaths. Repeat the ratio of 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths until help arrives. Use an AED as soon as one is available.
