Sepsis

Sepsis is a life-threatening complication that can be hard to spot. This is when the body responds to an acute infection and attacks its own tissues and organs.  

In other words, it’s your body’s overaction and toxic response to an infection. It affects over 25,000 children every year in the UK.

Suspect sepsis if a person with a known or suspected infection develops any of these signs or symptoms –

Early signs-

  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Fast pulse
  • Not passing urine
  • Fever
  • Low temperature

Severe sepsis-

  • Severe breathlessness 
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
  • Mottled skin, pale or discoloured
  • Hands and feet are cold
  • A rash that does not fade when you press it. May start like pin pricks  
  • Lethargic or difficulty waking
  • Seizure
  • Feeling faint or dizzy
  • Confused or disorientated 
  • Diarrhoea
  • Slurred speech
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle pain
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Making grunting noise

Treatment

  • Seek urgent medical advice 
  • Reassure the casualty and keep them cool by treating the fever
  • Monitor and record their vital signs
