Splinters

Splinters can enter the skin from wood, glass or metal. Here’s what to do if a child in your care gets one.
Treatment
- Clean the wound with soap and warm water
- Use tweezers and grip the end of the splinter as close to the skin as possible
- Gentle pull it out in a straight line direction, making sure it does not break off
- Squeeze the wound area to encourage a drop of blood. This will help clean the wound
- Dry the area and cover with a dressing if needed
If the splinter is embedded too deeply seek medical attention. Check the child’s tetanus immunisation is up to date.
