Teeth Injuries

Children’s baby teeth will start to fall out naturally when they reach 5 or 6 to make way for their adult teeth. If a child knocks one out accidently never try to replace it back into the mouth as this may cause damage to the new adult teeth coming through. Instead stop any initial bleeding by asking the child to bite down on a clean, sterile gauze and ensure they see a dentist.

Treatment

  • With gloves on, pick up the tooth by the crown not the root and rinse it under cold running water for 10 seconds
  • Push the tooth into the socket and cover it with a piece of sterile gauze
  • Ask the casualty to gently close their mouth over it
  • If you can not replace the tooth in the mouth after rinsing it wrap it in plastic film
  • If water is not available place the tooth in cows milk, not saline or water
  • Ensure the child sees a dentist as soon as possible to be reimplanted
  • Do not store the tooth in anything other than milk as this can damage the tooth
  • If the tooth is chipped keep any tooth fragments
