Treatment (Under 1’s)

If the coughing is loud, effective and they are fully responsive do not take action. Instead-

• Encourage the infant to cough
• Do not leave them
• Reassure the infant

If the cough starts to become ineffective and the situation is deteriorating ask someone to call 999/112 for emergency help. If you’re alone and have your phone handy, use the speaker function to do this while moving onto administering the treatment. 

If coughing is absent or ineffective shout for help, ask someone to call 999/112 and take action. Watch the video below on how to administer the first aid treatment.

The aim is to relieve the choking with each blow/ thrust rather than give all 5.
