Unconscious Choking Casualty

The first aid treatment for choking is very effective and it is likely you will be successful dislodging the blockage. If however the child/infant becomes unconscious move to the paediatric basic life support algorithm.
Airway opening:
- When opening the airway to give rescue breaths, look to see if there is anything in the mouth
- If an object is seen, attempt to remove it with a single finger sweep
- Never sweep blindly or repeatedly with fingers.
Rescue breaths
- Attempt 5 rescue breaths
- If the chest does not rise with the breath, reposition the head before making the next attempt
- Regardless of whether the breaths are successful or not immediately move on to chest compression and perform CPR – 30 compressions: 2 rescue breaths until help arrives
- If the child regains consciousness and is breathing effectively, place them in the recovery position and monitor breathing and level of consciousness whilst waiting for help to arrive.
Always seek urgent medical attention if:
- The child has received abdominal thrusts
- They have difficulty swallowing/ a persistent cough
- It feels like there is something stuck in their throat
